Artist Statement
The sculptures are created through devastating reformation of the material. Fire melts and moves the steel where I need it to go. The forms resulting slightly resemble the steel in its original form. In ceramics, the material is stressed cold, the fire applied as a finishing touch, revealing the stresses imposed in the making of the forms.
As I work with any material, I explore its possibilities and limits. The material teaches me what is possible. I develop an understanding of the material, a relationship with the material. I learn how I can change the material. During the creative process I develop a deeper understanding of materials strengths and weaknesses.
In these sculptures, most in steel, one in clay, the end result is sculpture that has an organic feel. Lava, tree bark, or flowing water are all good descriptions of the surfaces of my sculptures. These surfaces are all good indicators of movement and change.
I find the work meditative. As I work I am able to clear my mind and become completely involved in the process. I want the sculptures to be objects of meditation after the work is done.
